Moulton Harrox’s hopes of a Peterborough and District League treble are very much alive after sinking Premier Division title rivals Netherton United 2-0 on Saturday.
Sean Gedney and Dan Woods were on target for third-placed Harrox, as they moved within five points of their second-placed rivals with three games in hand.
The title hopefuls did have Danny Cairns sent off late on, but it didn’t sour what could prove to be a massive day in Moulton’s title bid.
That’s because leaders Peterborough Sports Parkway suffered a shock 5-1 home loss to Leverington Sports, putting Harrox within 12 points of them with a huge seven games in hand.
It was a cracking day for local sides in the top flight, with Crowland Town and Deeping Rangers Reserves both enjoying impressive wins.
Crowland strengthened their grip on sixth place with an empahtic 7-3 success over basement boys King’s Cliffe United at Snowden Field.
Luke Elsom led the charge with a heroic hat-trick, while Christopher Challis, Gavin McPartlin, Darren Paling and Steven Paling were also on target for the red-hot hosts.
Deeping Reserves, meanwhile, battled out a thrilling 5-4 win over Whittlesey United at Outgang Road.
In Division One, Long Sutton Athletic’s title charge continued as they picked up a 4-2 victory at Ryhall United.
Matt Cawthorn bagged a brace for the second-placed Magpies, while Matty Radeloff and James Ward also netted.
The victory moves Sutton within nine points of leaders King’s Lynn Town Reserves – and they have three games in hand.
Langtoft United remain well-positioned in fourth after they demolished Farcet United 8-2 at Manor Way.
John Armstrong helped himself to a treble for the hosts, with Andy Ellis, Daniel Morris, Calum Parker, Tom Glindon and Jason Gough also netting.
Sutton Bridge United remain in the bottom two though, having gone down 5-2 at home to Netherton United Reserves.
Down in Division Two, Gedney Hill remain second after edging out visitors Pinchbeck United Reserves 4-3.
Andy Bonarius (2), Sam Moakes and Billy Ponsford notched for Gedney, with Tom Elderkin, Mathew Hempsall and Aidan Moore on target for Pinchbeck. Hempsall missed a last-gasp penalty to earn United a point, just seconds after Moakes netted the winner.
Crowland Town Reserves were also winners, seeing off hosts Peterborough Rovers 4-2. Goals came from Jobi Froud, Jordan Kirchin, David Shamma and Michael Smith.
In Division Five, Holbeach United A smashed rivals Pinchbeck United 7-1. Jonny Wiggins led the way with a brace, while Gary Chappell, Jamie Forman, Danny Hunt, Kyle Williamson and Cymon Lambe also got in on the act. Jordon Mahon grabbed Pinchbeck’s consolation.
Two goals in each half helped Tydd St Mary bag a 4-1 home win over Peterborough Giants, keeping their hopes of a top two finish alive.
Aaron Parker fired the hosts ahead mid-way through the opening period, before Matt Eaton made it two just before the break. Eaton and Phil Franklin then wrapped up the points.
Tonight’s fixtures (Tuesday) see Moulton Harrox host Crowland Town at Long Sutton’s London Road and Pinchbeck United visit Ramsey Town. Both games are in the Premier Division and kick off at 7.30pm.
