EBA Section Four (Spalding area) Club Championship: WHAPLODE Drove shot to the top of the Group B standings with an impressive fifth win on the spin.
In what is their first year in the league after 22 seasons in the EBF League, the village side have been one of the success stories of the season so far. Their latest triumph was an impressive 10-0 home success over Holbeach USC A, which saw two rinks score 30 shots or more.
The biggest win came from D Mann, M Parkin, J Redden and J Ivatt (32-6), while Phil Beeken, T Parkin, Tim Tomizzi and R Harris (30-7) were also on-song.
They are now level on points with previous leaders Bourne Town, who lost the big game at the top 8-2 against third-placed Billingborough.
It was pretty tight throughout, but two convincing rink wins from W Wand, I Spencer, J Jones and S Long (19-8) and A Newton, K Baker, J Hall and G Chapman (21-13) swung the clash Boro’s way.
Meanwhile, Royal Mail Cart B and Long Sutton battled out a cracker. Mail Cart took two rinks and must have thought they’d done enough to clinch only a second win of the season.
But a big 24-11 return from R Everitt, D Fairbrother, R Hayden and E Bannock handed Sutton the aggregate spoils by a narrow 55-53 margin.
The duo are, typically, now locked together on 20 points just above the bottom two.
Perhaps the biggest game of the week took place in Group A, with Carter’s Park A edging clear of rivals Royal Mail Cart A at the summit after taking the spoils from their meeting.
The duo went into the top-of-the-table clash level on points – and from the off it was clear there wasn’t much between the sides.
Two narrow rink wins put Mail Cart on the bring of glory, but a crucial 20-11 victory from Ron Flowers, Terry Crane, G Palmer and J Forrest turned the tables and put the Holbeach side ahead on aggregate by one shot – ensuring the took the game 6-4.
Spalding Town A were the big winners in the top flight, as they heaped more misery on poor old Gosberton.
Three solid rink wins, including a 31-15 success from D Gedney, G Chappell, R Wing and W Phoenix, helped clinch a maximum 10-0 haul for Town.
Also on the winning trail were Ayscoughfee, who got the better of lowly Castle A 8-2. Their biggest rink win came from Chris Mycock, Eamonn Cherry, C Cherry and A Cherry (24-14).
In Triples A, unbeatable Carter’s Park A are going gr-eight guns at the top.
They kept their 100 per cent record alive with an eighth success on the trot, although high-flying Royal Mail Cart made them work hard for it.
Having secured a pair of rinks, the Spalding side were on the brink of ending the leader’s streak, only for a stunning 21-10 win from B Mee, Kath Crane and L Allen to save the day and secure a 6-4 scoreline.
Billingborough are equally dominant in Triples B – and they stayed clear by beating Castle B 8-2.
