Crowland firefighters’ car wash is sealed with a birthday kiss

A cheeky request from a generous motorist earned a woman of 80 a birthday kiss from one of Crowland’s firefighters.

Watch manager Stuart Annibele said: “It made her 80th birthday and, in return, she gave us £20 for our charity.”

Firefighters, their partners and children joined forces in the car wash event to raise a fantastic £1,349.70 for the Firefighters Charity.

Nearly 80 cars were washed on the day by the firefighters, with drivers making a minimum donation of £5 a time, while home-made cakes and teas were sold by their partners as children raffled Easter eggs donated by the Co-op.

Included in the grand total were refreshment sales amounting to £280 and £70 from the Easter eggs.

Stuart said: “We started washing cars at 10 o’clock and didn’t finish until 3.30pm – and we didn’t stop in between.”

Everyone involved was delighted with the total raised and grateful for massive support shown by residents.

“That’s what you get for being a community fire station,” said Stuart. “The community gets behind you.”

• Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter is welcome to find out more about the role by attending an open day at Crowland Fire Station between 10am-2pm on Sunday, May 8.

The service is open to men and women, aged 18 or more, who must be physically fit, have functional skills in maths and English and, ideally, live five minutes from the fire station.

Celebration day for relaunch of Home-Start South Holland

The work of a South Holland charity with vulnerable families in the area will be celebrated at a relaunch event in Surfleet on Thursday.

Home-Start South Holland is merging with seven other schemes across Lincolnshire, including Boston and Stamford, to become Home-Start Lincolnshire. With more than 500 trained volunteers, Home-Start supports at least 1,000 families and 2,300 children each year with emotional support, practical help and parental advice.

The event at The Fraiser Room, next to St Laurence’s Church, Surfleet,is on from 10am to 2.30pm and will include children’s activities and a family’s story of how Home-Start has helped them.

Emma Haisman of Home-Star Lincolnshire said: “We are recognising all our families, volunteers, trustees and supporters by inviting them to an event to celebrate the achievements of the charity and the next stage of the journey as we become one countywide organisation.

“The charity will continue to grow as the newly formed Home-Start Lincolnshire which is good news for the continued sustainability of our work within South Holland.

“We have an area office in Swineshead, incorporating the Boston area, and three other area offices strategically placed within the county.

“But these changes to the internal structure of the organisation will have no impact on the service we offer to our current families as, by pooling the resources and expertise of eight schemes together, we aim to reach more families throughout the county.”

Home-Start, launched in Lincolnshire 32 years ago, is one of the largest family support charity in the counties.

But Lincolnshire County Council decided to withdraw its funding for the charity of £430,000 last summer.

Home-Start Lincolnshire chief executive Tracey Ruddock, said: “This merger is very good news because, as a single charity, we can work more efficiently in supporting even more local families.”

Patients and the public are invited to the next governing body meeting in public of NHS South Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which takes place on Thursday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at the Eventus Centre, Northfield Industrial Estate, Market Deeping.

Led by local GPs and other health professionals, NHS South Lincolnshire CCG is responsible for the planning and purchasing of health services in Bourne, Market Deeping, Spalding, Long Sutton, Holbeach and surrounding areas in South Lincolnshire.

These services include planned and emergency hospital care, rehabilitation and most community services for the people of South Lincolnshire.

At the meeting the governing body will:

• Consider and sign-off the Strategic Operational Plan;

• Receive an update on public health including the annual report of the director of public health for Lincolnshire; and

• Be updated on the QIPP Focus Areas Update Report.

Dr Kevin Hill, chair of NHS South Lincolnshire, said: “Our governing body welcomes patients and the public to the meeting in Market Deeping.

“We hold these meetings in public to offer local people a first-hand opportunity to see how we are working to improve health services in South Lincolnshire.

“It’s important that patients have a much greater say in their healthcare and there are a number of ways that they can do that.

“Most of our GP practices now have a patient participation group which allows patients to work with the practice to ensure services are meeting the needs of local patients. We also encourage our patients to get involved in other ways and more information is available on our website at www.southlincolnshireccg.nhs.uk

Record entry for Spalding Cycling Club’s opener

The traditional season opening event for Spalding Cycling Club – the 27-mile hilly time trial – used the out and back Edenham course.

Reflecting the popularity of this event, organiser Claire Thomas received a record number of entrants – 51 with many names on the start list making a second or third appearance and attracting riders from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Fine conditions with very little wind at first made for some fast times but a rising head wind on the return leg ended any challenge to the course record of 56:59 set in 2015 by Brett Harwood.

Only three riders got inside the hour with Peterborough’s James Gelthorpe first in 58:02, exactly three minutes quicker than his 2015 ride and just four seconds quicker than James Perkins of Team Bottrill in 58:06.

Making up the podium was Alford Wheelers’ Adam Coffey who posted 59:30.

With five ladies racing, 2015 winner Louise Day of Team Swift had a bit more competition but was unable to pull off a repeat win when posting 1:15:12 for second place behind Ann Walsham of Maxx RT with 1:13:55.

Third fastest in the ladies race was Spalding’s Junior category rider Tilly Gurney in 1:22:18 followed in by Natali Tooley on 1:24:18 and Sarah Bentley with 1:25:34.

Fourth overall and fastest veteran on standard time was Neil Palmer of Velo-One with 01:00:18 and once again so close to getting inside the hour.

At the other end of the age categories, Sam Walsham of Team BikeBox Alan posted the best juniors time of 1:02:19 while Spalding’s Will Gurney recorded 1:31:08 in his debut open time trial.

The team event was won for the second year running by Peterborough’s squad of James Gelthorpe, Jason Burrill and Steve Wood.

Lincoln Wheelers’ Peter Holland makes this event every year a bit different by riding a trike, completing the course in 1:41:37.

First home for Spalding, Ben Moore put in a strong ride to finish 12th overall by stopping the clock on 1:02:58 to win Group D.

Other Spalding members times: Simon Wright 1:14:09 (57 seconds quicker than 2015), Andrew Gurney 1:15:04, Derek Chamberlain 1:1:16:32, Gary Bentley 1:17:44 (almost three minutes off his 2015 time).

Mark Hills did not finish.

Strong debut for Antony and podium for Neil

Five Velo-One Cycling riders battled wind and rain at Sleaford Wheelers’ annual charity 10-mile time trial in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The popular early event saw an incredible full field of 150 riders start in one-minute intervals on the undulating A15 road from Sleaford to Osbournby.

Making their debut rides for V1 were Antony Gough, David Anderson and Scott Francis.

Bourne-based Gough, a seasoned tester, soon found his form – finishing 22nd with a time of 24mins 16 secs.

Anderson and Francis, both new to competitive racing, finished 81st and 86th with times of 28:16 and 28:56 respectively.

An unfortunate puncture in the last miles coupled with some early season rustiness saw Dan Carr finish 70th with a time of 27:42.

Spalding’s Neil Palmer continued to show great form with his second podium of the season, finishing third with a time of 22:51 – a great achievement against a field of strength and depth.

Damage done in first half as Spalding lose final

$

Spalding under-17s travelled to Hull on Easter Sunday to take part in the inaugural Colts Sevens festival which featured 12 strong teams.

They were in a tough championship group with Driffield, Leigh Lions and Selby.

Spalding, usually slow starters, won the first game against Driffield – although at times making hard work of it.

Good tries were scored by JJ Faulkner and Cory Lewis, both converted by Adam Castle in a 14-7 win.

The second game was against Selby who later won the overall cup competition.

This was a close affair and Selby just edged it 12-7. Mark Hendy scored Spalding’s only try which was converted by Castle.

This was a game Spalding could have won as they were pressing at the end, only to run out of time.

In the third game, Spalding needed to win to progress in the cup but came up against a very strong Lancashire side Leigh.

Spalding lost 28-5 with the only score coming from a determined Elliot Kulleseid who took two players with him over the line to score.

Spalding went through in third place and into the bowl where they faced Doncaster in the semi-finals where they played their best rugby.

First to score was Hendy, then from a scrum on halfway James Thomas broke blind to hand off and score.

Hendy was again on the scoresheet and Faulkner cut a great line for his second of the day.

Castle eased Spalding into the bowl final with a classy score and three conversions to run out 31-10 winners.

In the final Spalding found themselves up against Leigh Lions for the second time of the day.

Leigh started well with a good winger’s try but the contest was blemished with a horrible neck tackle to Castle and later to Scuffham.

The referee allowed play to go on and Leigh scored.

Lewis saw a yellow after what was deemed as reckless play and at half-time Spalding found themselves 19-0 down.

Spalding’s heads never dropped as a breakaway from Tom Birdseye allowed James Thomas in good support to cut inside and beat two men for a well-earned try. Castle converted.

Thomas was again on the scoreboard as Hendy chipped through and the scrum-half just beat the Leigh defender in a race to the line.

The damage was done in the first half and Leigh won the bowl 32-14.

Coach Simon Faulkner said: “They were deserved winners.

“It was good to see both sides who travelled the furthest – one from Lincolnshire, the other from Lancashire – challenged for the final.

“Well done both teams. Overall, the boys acquitted themselves well in a very well-organised sevens tournament.

“Spalding will be looking to improve on this next year, as this tournament will grow in strength.”

Squad: Castle, Whadcock, Faulkner, Thomas, Birdseye, Scuffham, Kulleseid, Emery, Thompson, Hendy, Lewis, Morris.

Bookmark of Spalding has selected Ghost Flight by Bear Grylls as its Book of the Week.

Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognised faces of survival and outdoor adventure.

Now after his success he delivers his action-packed debut novel – the start of a major new adventure series.

The explosive debut from the TV presenter and survival expert was inspired by the experiences of Bear’s grandfather, Brigadier Ted Grylls, and his role in a secret task force during World War II.

Described as The Bourne Identity meets Indiana Jones, it’s a thriller to take your breath away.

A mother and child savagely abducted from a snow-swept mountainside. A loyal soldier tortured and executed on a remote Scottish moor. A lost warplane discovered in the heart of the Amazon jungle, harbouring a secret of earth-shattering evil. A desperate race to defeat a terrifying conspiracy emanating from the darkest days of Nazi Germany. One thread unites them all. Only one man can unravel it. Will Jaeger. The Hunter. Left for dead, now he’s back for revenge.

If an entertaining read, a good story and a how to survive the most challenging of conditions sounds appealing, this is the book you need to read.

The book retails for £7.99 but there is a 20 per cent discount voucher in the Spalding Guardian of March 31.

A regular column by Tulip Radio’s Jan Whitbourn.

On Sunday, July 3 Tulip Radio will be organising an event for Armed Forces Celebration Day in association with Harold Payne, from the Anglia Motel.

It will conclude a month of celebrations dedicated to the Armed Forces and will be a meet and greet with local veterans, many of whom will be interviewed by Tulip Radio about their time in the Armed Forces. The interviews will be put on Tulip Radio’s website www.tulip-radio.co.uk in their podcast section for everyone to hear, the interviews preserved for future generations.

The day will consist of enactments of how people lived, and how they dressed. There will be war-time classics for everyone to sing along and dance to. A mobile war museum decorated with pictures of Spitfires, Lancasters and tanks will have a display of guns, ammunition, film, old uniforms, medals, photos and memories of past soldiers from our community, all collected from the first and second World Wars.

A lunch will be provided followed by a ‘Ready Steady Cook’ competition between two couples from our local forces organisations, creating food which was served during the war.

This event will give the community an opportunity to say thank you to the armed forces and will run alongside events being organised by Harold Payne at the Anglia Motel.

Tulip Radio is appealing to all Armed Force veterans and anyone who has served in the Forces to email or get in contact with Tulip Radio as soon as possible. Everyone is eligible for the Armed Forces Veterans Badge, and this will be presented to you on the day by John Hayes MP and councillors from the South Holland District Council. Please call Tulip Radio 01775 712400 or email jan@tulip-radio.co.uk
