Sandwich chain Subway could soon open in Bourne.

The global firm wants to open 10 new shops in Lincolnshire this year, the first of which will be in Bourne.

A spokesman said the location for the new shop had not yet been confirmed, but the company was looking at options in the Burghley Centre.

The Subway would have seating for 36 customers and would create 10 new jobs.

The spokesman said the Bourne shop could open as soon as July, and the company was also considering options in Rutland, although nothing had yet been confirmed.

Development agent Tesh Patel added: “It is ideally placed in a dynamic shopping area and will give busy shoppers a lighter lunchtime option.”

A regular column from Tulip Radio’s Jan Whitbourn.

George Drakard has recently joined us as a part-time technical assistant and already he’s got to grips with many of our IT systems which form a vital part of our operation.

He is a natural volunteer, having done so at several local primary schools as well as using his time to teach IT skills to the elderly and others who struggle with IT.

He tells us he really enjoys seeing the look of pleasure and surprise on students’ faces when they realise how logical many of the processes are.

George, who attained a 100 per cent attendance record when he was at school, has been a member of various aquatic clubs like Spalding Amateur Swimming Club and South Lincs Competitive Swimming Club as well as enjoying water polo sessions. He’s still a member of Spalding Sub Aqua Club.

Currently George is learning to drive and finding out how a car is put together and how it works, a subject he’s finding increasingly fascinating.

He owns a classic mini which he is restoring bit by bit while he learns to drive.

So keen is he on the marque that he has recently formed the Spalding Mini Club which is gaining new members rapidly.

Away from IT, his hobbies are films, music, food, hanging out with friends, gadgets, electronics and, of course, classic cars.

Man ‘obsessed with sex’ sentenced to 12 years in prison for string of offences against young girls

A Wyberton man who admitted a string of sex offences against two young girls has today (Tuesday) been jailed for 12 years.

At an earlier hearing Mark Eaton, 41, pleaded guilty to 19 sexual charges. The offences included six charges of rape, four charges of indecent assault, four charges of assault by penetration and a single charge of sexual assault.

Eaton also admitted two charges of engaging in a sexual act in the presence of a child and two charges of causing a child to watch a sexual act. All the offences occurred between January 2003 and December 2013.

Passing sentence at Lincoln Crown Court Recorder Gareth Evans QC told Eaton his abuse was “serious and depraved.”

The Recorder said: “It is clear to me you are a man who was, and maybe still is, obsessed with sex. You watched pornography on a daily basis.”

Eaton was arrested on January 13 this year after both of his victims, who can not be named, gave video recorded interviews to specially trained police officers.

The court heard Eaton had watched pornography on a daily basis and regularly got drunk on Jack Daniels.

Eaton did not request a solicitor while he was questioned by the police and made ‘full and frank admissions’.

Jeremy Janes, prosecuting, told the court: “He said he had done wrong and wanted to tell the officers what he had done.”

The court was told Eaton suffered a spinal stroke in 2009 and was now confined to a wheelchair.

Catherine Bradshaw, mitigating, said Eaton was disgusted with himself and wished he could turn the clock back,.

Eaton, formerly of The Causeway, Wyberton, Boston, will also have to register as a sex offender for life.

Local bands are being invited to take the plunge and get the party started for this year’s Deeping’s Raft Race.

The popular event is taking place on Sunday, August 2, and organisers say they are well on their way to planning the biggest race ever.

This year’s theme is “Cartoon Characters”, so there is plenty of scope for competitors to dress up as their favourite character and add to the colourful spectacle.

It’s not all just for fun. Charities that are set to benefit include Dementia Support South Lincs and The Exotic Pet Refuge in Deeping St James.

Organiser Andy Pelling said: “We are approaching our loyal sponsors who ensure this event can take place every year, but there is always room for more sponsors.

“We are hoping there are organisations out there who would like to sponsor a race or donate a raffle prize.

“Also, if anyone would like a trade stand at this popular event, please apply through the website.

“Whilst we do now have a strong group of volunteers working on this project – there is an awful lot to do – so anyone willing to help out as a marshall on the day for a couple of hours or in the many tasks during the weeks leading up to the big day should contact us through the website.

“Additionally, any budding local bands that would like to showcase themselves at our pre-raft race music night should get in touch.”

Anyone wishing to help or enter a raft into this unique and fun event should visit the website at www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk for more details.

Darts legends Martin “Wolfie” Adams will be granted the freedom of Deeping St James at the village’s annual parish meeting.

The three-time BDO World Champion will become the first person to receive the honour at the meeting on May 19.

Deeping St James Parish Council has used the event to present its Making a Difference awards in recent years.

Councillors try to recognise the efforts of individuals, young people and community groups, and also offer village organisations the chance to talk about what they have been doing that year.

But this year the council hopes to add extra interest by awarding Wolfie the freedom of the parish of Deeping St James.

The meeting will be held in the conference centre at the Deepings School in Park Road from 7.30pm on May 19.

There are three categories in the Making a Difference awards: citizen, individual under 18 and community group. The prizes will be presented by local triathlete and under 20s Team GB member Kayleigh Adams.

The second of the whole school General Election Awareness assemblies has taken place at Spalding Grammar School.

Conservative John Hayes of the Conservative Party and Dan Wilshire (an old boy) of the Green Party were invited to address students and answer any questions.

The previous week we heard from Labour, UKIP and the Liberal Democrats.

To help students understand the election, how it works and why it’s important to vote, the school is holding an inter-house mock election.

Interestingly, Dan Wilshire, this year’s parliamentary candidate for the Green Party, took part in this mock election when he was a student here... evidence to support just how much of an impact this school event can have on improving awareness and interest in current affairs.

There are student volunteers representingthe Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Green and UKIP and they have been campaigning for their parties and their policies.

There are plenty of party posters throughout the school, and lots of students are also promoting their campaigns using the other resources available to them – school televisions, the school website and the weekly newsletter.

Students will be able to vote for their chosen party and candidate of choice during form period on election day, May 7.

A spokesman said: “We are encouraging the school community to get involved in the pre-election hype, take the opportunity to vote for who/what they believe in, and we look forward to hearing who managed to gain the most votes in the coming weeks.”

Church flower festival in Spalding and district

There are roofs to be mended and ancient buildings to be protected.

Just two of the pressing reasons behind South Holland Church Flower Festivals which carries on over the bank holiday weekend.

The festival is also a good opportunity to welcome people into the district’s churches, looking their very best filled with staggeringly beautiful flower displays.

That is the case at St Paul’s Church, Fulney, where the Rev Mike Chesher says the theme, Beauty of the Earth, gave the arrangers the opportunity to create sculptures telling some big stories.

He said: “Obviously any money we raise at the moment has to go towards the new roof because we are £30,000 short on that, and then we need to do the kitchen so we can make meals for the homeless and hungry when the autumn comes.

“That’s what we need to raise money for. With a relatively small membership, and some getting elderly, it’s a struggle, but it’s a hard-working little church community and they are good people.”

It’s the ruined nave at Crowland Abbey that will benefit from any money raised from Monday’s Traditional Craft Fair (10am to 4pm).

Organiser Janet Prescott says local crafters with handmade items, such as bee keepers, wood turners, patchwork stitchers and other makers, will have stalls.

The bee keeper will also be sharing information on his hobby and local artists will hopefully create some work during the fair.

Entry is free and there is a barbecue all day.
