Good year for barn owls, says Deeping St Nicholas farmer

Deeping St Nicholas farmer and conservationist Nicholas Watts says barn owls are having their most successful year in three decades.

Nicholas has erected 17 barn owl boxes at Vine House Farm and monitors their success each year.

He says the last two years have been very challenging for them with a shortage of their main source of food – voles.

However, this year he has a record 13 boxes being occupied with a brood, with three pairs now on to their second brood – one of which has ten eggs, the most ever recorded.

Nicholas, worked tirelessly over 30 years to create the right habitat for wildlife on his land, attributes their success to the warm weather, which has resulted in a good breeding season for voles.

Boss looks for home comforts

Two home games this week will offer an opportunity for Spalding United to kick-start the season after an opening-day defeat.

The Tulips – beaten 2-0 by Sutton Coldfield Town at the weekend – take on Brigg Town tonight before Chasetown’s trip to the Sir Halley Stewart Field on Saturday.

Manager Pat Rayment admitted they paid the price for failing to convert clear-cut chances against the Royals in their first game of the Evo-Stik League First Division South campaign.

But, despite the result, he was not too disappointed by the display.

Rayment said: “It was the first time I’ve had that squad together and we had unbelievable chances to win the game.

“We are going to have to learn as we go along but we won’t be beating anyone 7-0 or 8-0 like we did in the United Counties League.

“We did well on Saturday but it just wasn’t our day.

“We hit the bar and had two one-on-one chances. They were golden opportunities to take the lead.

“Then just before half-time we didn’t communicate well and we ended up giving away a needless corner which resulted in the first goal.

“The second goal must have bobbled 20 times before it went in the net but they didn’t create a chance against us.

“On another day Jordan Thomas would have scored but he didn’t take those chances.

“I’m not too disappointed overall.

“I thought Kern Miller and Chris Hall were outstanding.

“Our lads have played around 800 Football League games between them so this level should present no problems.

“We just need to get to know each other and play together.

“We can only get better and I expect us to do that with plenty of games coming up.

“I will take more from Saturday’s game than we were able to get out of pre-season.

“And I will take comfort from the effort against a top-six side who have the advantage of having a 3G pitch which is a nightmare to play on.”

Rayment revealed that central defender Nathan Stainfield is struggling with a neck strain suffered in the final pre-season friendly at Horncastle Town.

He could miss tonight’s game but definitely ruled out are goalkeeper Michael Duggan (ankle) plus strikers Mark Jones (knee) and Andrew Tidswell (unavailable).

In the FA Cup preliminary round a week on Saturday, meanwhile, Spalding will be at home to Heanor Town who beat Long Eaton United 1-0 on Friday night.

Weston farm contractor using one of biggest lime spreaders in UK

One of just two of the biggest lime and fertiliser spreaders in the UK has been working locally.

The Danish made KRM Bredal with a sprayer that holds about 23 tonnes, is owned by Weston agricultural contractors Bellamy Farming.

Lincolnshire Free Press photographer Tim Wilson caught up with it on land at Gosberton Risegate owned by Proctor Bros (Gosberton) Ltd.

Julian says the spinning deck can spread up to 36m of lime or fertiliser, against a more typical 24m, and two to four tonnes an acre over a 12m width.

The spreader is in use across Cambridgeshire, south Lincolnshire and Norfolk from January to May and mid-July right through until Christmas, spreading up to 20,000 tonnes of lime in a season.

Julian said: “We hope it’s a good investment. We have had lime spreaders for the last 30 years but this is the biggest we have had.

“It’s very weather orientated, like all farming jobs.”

Don’t panic – the Home Guard’s ready for action

The town turned out to salute veterans from the Second World War at the annual VJ parade and service in Spalding. Veterans joined dignitaries from South Holland District Council and members of the public in Ayscoughfee Gardens on Sunday to commemorate Victory in Japan Day.

Meakins bids for international glory

Quadring Fen grass track rider Tom Meakins bids for glory in the International Lincolnshire Poacher on Sunday.

Meakins finished second in the International Junior Poacher as a 12-year-old in 2000, but would love to go one better this time around.

The event, which takes place at Thorpe St Peter near Skegness, has been won by international speedway riders such as Joe Screen, Kelvin Tatum and Paul Hurry and Meakins would love to add his name to the illustrious honours board.

He has certainly progressed from that runners-up spot he achieved 14 years ago, which came on a motorbike built in a shed for less than £100.

He has become one of the top riders in his class and has won numerous trophies in the 500cc class, riding Jawa and Godden machines.

Sunday’s action, which takes place on Britain’s only recognised 1000m track, features European champion Theo Pijper of Holland. Action gets under way at 1pm.

Longford roars to victory in the final

Spalding drivers dominated proceedings in the Pre-1975 Banger Racing at King’s Lynn’s Norfolk Arena.

Will Longford roared to victory in the meeting final after Dan Booth and Simon Goodale had both taken heat wins.

Longford led the early
stages of the final, before Goodale moved ahead and Booth followed him
through.

Booth then managed to push Goodale’s Triumph – the first TR7 raced at the venue – into the fence to take the lead himself.

But Longford’s Vauxhall VX4/90 was still in the running and he managed to turn Booth’s Austin Maxi hard into the fence to take a lead he would not relinquish.

Moulton’s Jamie Clayton fell short on his attempt to claim a hat-trick of finals in the Saloon Stock Cars, but did manage a second place early on in the meeting.

F2 Stock Car star Steve Wycherley of Holbeach made his debut in the high powered F1 Stock Cars and showed that he will be a good asset.

Racing returns to the venue on Monday (1pm). Big Van Bangers top the bill, while the three-wheeled Reliant Robins will contest the prestigious World of Shale Championship.

Kirton ace set for local outing

Kirton rider Ben Wilson is hoping for impoved fortunes on his local circuit over the Bank Holiday weekend when the British Superbike championship travels to Lincolnshire for the annual Cadwell Park Party in the Park round.

Wilson had a torrid time in the previous round as he was withdrawn from the three races by Gearlink Kawasaki when the machine became unstable.

The bike has been stripped down and rebuilt over the past two weeks in an effort to solve the problems that have plagued the team for the majority of the campaign and Wilson has completed two test sessions.

The weekend begins with two free practice sessions on Saturday, one at 10.10am and the other at 3.30pm.

On Sunday there is a third free practice session at 10.10am ahead of the three-stage qualifying laps at 4.05pm.

Bank Holiday Monday sees Wilson take part in the 15-minute warm-up to make sure all is well for the two races, the first of which is at 1pm and takes in 18 laps of the picturesque Cadwell circuit.

The second race is scheduled for 4.30pm over the same distance. Sunday’s qualifying and Monday’s two races will be screened live by British Eurosport 2.

Parnell happier

Long Sutton sidecar racer Scott Parnell was delighted to put his fuel problems behind him to produce a solid performance in the British Formula Two Championship at the Croft circuit in North Yorkshire.

Having failed to finish both races at Donington Park last time out, Parnell and passenger Dean Kilkenny were in much happier mood this time around.

Parnell entered for both the two 14-lap championship races and the eight-lap club events.

Qualifying in 22nd for the first championship race, they went on to finish 16th when averaging 77mph for the race and then finished fifth and sixth places in the club races.

In total they managed a remarkable 47 laps on the Saturday and therefore decided not to compete in the two club races 24 hours later.

The Sunday championship race saw them settle into a good pace as they battled it out with several other sidecars over the 14 laps.

Some impressive overtaking saw them finish 15th and they are now hoping to keep on improving at the next and final round at Cadwell Park in four weeks.

Cadwell Park debut for G&S star Kevin

Wyberton-based G&S racing Kawasaki make the short trip to Cadwell Park this weekend with Dominic Usher and Tom Fisher racing in the National Superstock 1000 class and Kevin Van Leuven contesting the Stock 600 race.

On the back of a strong race in the last round at Oulton Park, Usher will be seeking more of the same to boost his points tally while Fisher will be hoping to progress into the top 20 at one of his favourite circuits.

Van Leuven is eagerly anticipating the Cadwell round as he can’t wait to have a crack at the famous mountain section of the course.

He was at the meeting as a spectator last year and watching the riders fly over the mountain made his mind up to join a British team to ride it himself.

He had a number of teams interested in him for the 2014 season but chose to join G&S.

The Dutchman will get his first taste of the popular Lincolnshire circuit on Saturday when the Stock 600s take to the track at 11.10am for free practice.

The stock 1000s take part in their free practice at 12.20pm and, after lunch, the stock 600s are back on track for the first qualifying session at 4.30pm followed by the 1000s at 5.40pm.

On Sunday final qualifying for the 600 stockers is at 11.50am and the 1000s are on track for their final qualifying session at 2.05pm

Monday is race day and first up at 11.20am are the Stock 1000 riders for their 15-lap race while the 600 class ride in their 12-lap race at 1.50pm.

Sutterton day centre starts to bloom

An adult day centre in Sutterton has worked with a local vegetable producer to help make a town bloom.

Thistles Adult Day Centre was given £400 by the Produce World Group to purchase rail sleepers to create raised beds for people in wheelchairs and others to enjoy.

Everyone at Thistles and volunteers also provided wheelchair access as part of Boston in Bloom. Thistles also made an unusual flower bed from a restored dinghy filled with native sea plants sponsored by the veg giant.

University fees and funding options – by our financial columnist Scott Woods

Last week’s A-level results had students nervously checking to see if they had achieved the grades required for their preferred university courses.

Equally, there will be many concerned parents contemplating how they can provide some financial support for their children’s continued studies.

Fortunately, this year’s Budget may have thrown those parents a lifeline.

Firstly, from April 2015 there will be no limits on how much can be withdrawn from money purchase pension savings, opening up the possibility of using pension funds to pay for university fees.

Secondly and at the same time, the savings rate tax band will be extended to £5,000 and savings income falling within this band will be tax free.

More than half of parents potentially underestimate the maximum amount of debt their child could be saddled with on leaving university.

Research by pensions and insurance group Standard Life has shown that some 58 per cent of parents think the figure is less than £40,000, while others think it is well below this figure.

According to the National Union of Students, the average students spends about £22,189 each year on tuition fees, accommodation and living costs.

So for a typical three-year course, that totals almost £67,000 and if you look at today’s ten-year-olds commencing university studies in 2022, they would need in the region of £83,000, assuming inflation of 2.5 per cent.

The Budget threw up an alternative way of saving for university fees, though – through a pension.

From next April, pensions will become accessible for the over 55s, opening up the possibility of tax relievable university fees funding.

Of course, those making gifts from their pension savings will need to ensure they can still meet their own future income needs in retirement.

Tulips rewarded on extra-special night

Spalding United 4 Brigg Town 1

It was a nightmare for three goalkeepers – but an extra-special evening for Spalding United.

The first home game of the season ended in a margin of victory which the Tulips have been used to handing out at a lower level.

And they were good value for three points to kick-start the campaign following their opening-day defeat.

An excellent effort could have been spoiled when an own-goal by Michael Duggan gifted Brigg Town’s equaliser.

But Spalding simply stepped up a gear and made sure that they got what they deserved.

Having missed first-half chances to take the lead at Sutton Coldfield Town on Saturday, the Tulips went in front with their opening clear-cut opportunity on Tuesday night as Jamie Thurlbourne fired home on 19 minutes.

Before the break it could have become comfortable but Kern Miller, Jordan Thomas and Ash Burbeary missed the target while Thurlbourne’s free-kick was headed out.

Brigg only briefly looked like posing a threat through Joshua Nichol who was denied by Duggan’s tackle and then the striker headed over with another golden chance.

However, they got back on level terms when Duggan punched Anthony Bowsley’s corner into the air and then pushed the ball into his own net.

The keeper, on his return from injury, had looked so assured in collecting crosses until that moment.

So, after a basic error, he would have been relieved when Spalding regained the advantage just eight minutes later.

Chris Hall won a corner which Thurlbourne swung over for Miller to nod home.

Waumsley’s header came off the crossbar but Brigg were reduced to 10 men when Jody Barford handled outside the penalty box.

Defender Brett Lucas took the number one jersey and gloves but his first task was picking the ball out of the net as Waumsley got the final touch to Thurlbourne’s deflected free-kick.

Lucas had no chance as Mitch Griffiths made it 4-1 on his full debut, although the winger suffered a hamstring injury in shooting.

South Holland begins to pull together to aid the troops

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, which we are commemorating by bringing you articles from this paper at the time of the Great War.

South Holland began making preparations in order to help the country and its troops in any way possible.

It was decided that an offer would be sent to the British Red Cross for any wounded soldiers or sailors to be sent to the Johnson Hospital in Spalding.

An appeal was made to Spalding for donations of funds to help the hospital make preparations for the reception of the wounded.

The Spalding Red Cross centre were to equip the hospital with all necessary surgical appliances and bandages, as well as helping them to receive and treat up to 40 wounded men at a time, with 24 hours’ notice.

Spalding also put on plans to provide a “rest station” at the railway station in the town, which would offer refreshments to wounded men who were passing through on their way to the Johnson Hospital.

The local St John Ambulance Brigade were to be in charge of the wounded at the station, and would transport them to the hospital.

One of the waiting rooms at the station was to be reserved for this service, and was to include six beds for any patients who were too ill to continue to the base hospital.

Plans were also put in place for cooking utensils to be made available at the station, so that refreshments could also be provided for the other wounded on trains passing through the station.

The Red Cross also made arrangements for its “lady workers” to make articles of clothing needed by the wounded both at home and abroad.

The Long Sutton Institute was selected by the Red Cross as a hospital.

Mrs Sutcliffe, the wife of a doctor, gave preliminary lectures to those at the institute in preparation for receiving at least twelve wounded.

At Harenden House in Fleet, 58 men met for drill instructions which were lead by Sergeant Major Pilton, to prepare them for home defence.

The men were described as “splendid specimens of the agricultural interests” and “broad shouldered, alert, vigorous sons of the soil”.

After an hour’s drill the men were said to look much more military in their appearance.
