Black Lion roared to the Spalding and District League’s Supreme Cup title as they stunned champions New Saracen’s Head C on finals night.

Dave Piccaver held his nerve to see out a thrilling final 12-9 to secure a memorable cup win for the league runners-up at Spalding Services Club.

There was also a Division Two double for Rose and Crown and Kelly Foster Cup glory for Lamb and Flag, while Ashley Allen took the Singles crown.

Starting with the Supreme final, Black Lion gained revenge for their league loss with the result of the night. Kelvin Crane (3-0), James Truman (2-1), Gary Mace (2-1) and Piccaver (2-1) all secured singles wins to see of mighty Sarancen’s C, who replied through Mark Horspool (2-1), Pete Richardson (2-1) and Phil Povey (2-1).

It was more one-sided in the Secondary Cup, as second-tier kings Rose and Crown made light work of Whaplode Drove 16-5. Maximum 3-0 wins from Dougie McInerney, Shaun Biggs, Alex Gostic, Paul Ford and Mick Ebbage delivered the goods and sealed a double.

In the Kelly Foster final, top tier outfit Lamb and Flag went into their showdown with Abbey Hotel as favourites – and there was no upset. Mark Woodrow (2-1), Ashley Allen (3-0), Ben Merillion (2-1), Phil Machin (2-1) and Mick Allen (3-0) secured a 13-8 success.

Meanwhile, Des Ford from Rose and Crown picked up a 2-1 win over Black Lion’s Daniel Carnell to lift the Captain’s Cup, while Lion’s top girl Claire Ball bossed Abbey’s Nicky Rostron 2-0 in the Ladies’ Cup final.

Ashley Allen (Lamb and Flag) had too much for Hank Watson (Jolly Farmer A) and took the Division One Singles title 2-0, with Rose and Crown’s McInerney landing the Division Two Singles gong 2-1 at the expense of Ady Smith (Jolly Farmer B).

Dominant New Saracen’s Head duo Horspool and Hunt walked off with the the Division One Pairs trophy having seen off Andy Beeken and Jason Vines (Fisherman’s Arms) 2-0, while Dave Kirchin and Stuart Norton beat Jordan Kirchin and Andy Rostron 2-0 in the all-Abbey final in the Division Two pairs final.

Crowland’s part in the English Civil War is being celebrated in a concert at the Abbey on Saturday (7.30pm).

In April 1643 Crowland stood as a solitary royalist citadel commanding the approaches to the Welland and the Nene, the surrounding fenland almost entirely in the hands of the enemy.

Crowlanders armed with muskets and hassock knives had to first withstand an assault by the relatively raw militia of Spalding, followed by three trained Parliamentary forces attacking simultaneously.

Learn what followed at the concert, entitled These Distracted Tymes. Divers Voyces is singing music from the time, including works by Thomas Tomkins, John Jenkins and Henry and William Lawes. Admission £7 on the door.

Gardening with Daphne: Question Time at Stamford

$
0
0

In past years, I’ve spent much time (and money!) at gardening shows up and down the country, but recently shortage of time and cost of travelling have cut down this delightful activity drastically.

It has long been my wish that we had a really good show locally, so less time and expense could be used on travelling and more on enjoying the show itself. Maybe my wish has started to come true at last.

The Rotary Club of Stamford St Martins is organising a garden show on Sunday on the beautiful Stamford Meadows in the centre of the town, bordering the River Welland, where, as a youngster, I used to walk my dalmatian dogs and watch the kingfishers skilfully attempt to deplete the river of fish. Ah, those were the days…..

The theme of the show is ‘Inspiring Gardening for All’. It is a free-to-visit community event and family fun day, with garden and food stalls, children’s rides and competitions.

I shall, of course, be there (try keeping me away!), giving a demonstration in the Speakers’ Tent (you’ll have to come along to see what it’s all about) and passing on lots of gardening skills and tips.

There’s a Gardening Question Time with me and two other panellists, so bring your questions along – it’s no fun talking to yourself!

The show opens at 10am and goes on throughout the day.

Get there early before the crowds for the very best opportunities and check http://stamfordgardenshow.co.uk/ regularly for updates.

There is ample parking both sides of the Meadows, with very little distance to walk.

All we need now is a fine, warm day without the searingly cold wind that has made gardening this spring such a chore.

You never know, this may be the start of another Chelsea – I really hope so.

Deepings Festival

A feast of performance and visual arts can be seen at the Deepings School this weekend (10am to 4pm).

Deepings Arts Festival includes Saturday’s programme of presentations and displays by local primary schools and performing arts groups.

Tickets are available from 01778 345195/342811.

Throughout the weekend there will be an art exhibition in the conference room at the school. At the same time, organisers will be holding the second bring & buy art mart, in which unwanted art materials are sold on.

There will also be two art workshops over the weekend (10am to 2.30pm).

Kate, best known as co-presenter of Springwatch and Autumnwatch, will be talking about her latest book, Humble by Nature.

In it, Kate and her husband take on a working farm near where they live to prevent it being broken into lots and sold off.

Trouble was, they hadn’t got a clue how to run a farm!

The book charts the ups and downs of the farm’s first pivotal year and is peppered with recipes. Tickets for the evening cost £3.50.

Calling the Tune: Four and Twenty Blackbirds

Tulip Radio went medieval this week, as we talked to Julia Grant, of ‘Four and Twenty Blackbirds’, who specialise in historical food preparation and cooking methods.

Whether it is food from Medieval, Tudor, Elizabethan, Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian times that you’re after, the Grants have done the lot, as they told us all about how they combine authentic methods of food preparation with historically accurate equipment.

4 & 20 Blackbirds have brought their historic food displays and demonstrations to various heritage sites, history events and museums, including Ayscoughfee Hall and Gardens.

Their presentations often come with fully-costumed interpreters and interactive displays, and they have even brought a display of owls and falcons on occasion.

In July 2011 Julia, along with fellow director Jenny Rogers, presented a paper and demonstration on ‘Medieval Food for Modern People’, for the International Medieval Congress at Leeds University.

Julia told us that they have spent over 15 years researching and recreating the past, resulting in the authentic historical dishes they display in their shows.

If you fancy learning more about medieval food and its preparation, or simply enjoy your history, check out the full interview with these medieval maestros on the podcast section of our website, at tulip-radio.co.uk, and you can also find the latest community news and events there.

Revised plans for Holland Market

Plans to revamp and expand Spalding’s Holland Market have been revised due to the “tough economic environment”.

Owners Corbo had big plans for the site, which were believed to have included a supermarket and new retail units, but have revealed the plans are now being revisited.

However, Holland Market manager Michael Moran said the company was still committed to investing in Spalding.

He said: “We recognise Holland Market needs to be better integrated with the town centre and we are now trying to work out a plan that would achieve that, but the economic environment has changed since we started this process so the plans needs to be revised.”

Under the original scheme, Corbo was looking, in conjunction with South Holland District Council, at the possibility of moving the bus station, possibly to Swan Street.

He said: “The bus station is a matter for the town and the council but we think it is probably in the wrong place and needs investing in. Ideally it would still be part of our plans.”

The Holland Market site is currently home to chains including Marks and Spencer, Argos, Halfords, B&Q and Wilkinsons.

Mr Moran said: “Fundamentally Spalding is an important part of Corbo’ portfolio and as a major landowner we have an interest in improving Spalding.”

Tasty recipe for the weekend

Rajapur Indian Cuisine only opened as a restaurant and takeaway in Bridge Road, Sutton Bridge, in April but is already building up a loyal following of customers.

The family-run business prides itself on offering a family friendly atmosphere.

It is open seven days a week and has a Rajapur Banquet Special every Sunday and Monday, although customers can also choose from the a la carte menu.

The large restaurant also has a private function room available for hire and can cook a special menu for weddings, engagements and other celebrations.

The restaurant is sharing its recipe for one of its medium to fairly hot recipes, King Prawn Sizzler, which is marinated with herbs and spices and cooked in a bhuna sauce with onions and peppers. Owner Nur Hussain says: “It is rich in a blend of flavours to give a mouthwatering taste.”

you will need

King prawns

2 cloves of chopped garlic

1 chopped onion

2 chopped green chilli

1 tomato

1 red and 1 green pepper, both chopped

3 tablespoons of olive oil

1 teaspoon of curry powder

half a teaspoon of turmeric, cumin, coriander, curry powder

2 teaspoons of tomato puree

A few shelled pistachios

Finely chopped spring onion

Fresh coriander for garnish

method

Marinate the king prawns with herbs and spices overnight before cooking in their shells to enhance the flavour.

Cook the prawns with onion, garlic and peppers until golden brown.

Blend the other ingredients (apart from the coriander and pistachio) and add to the pan and cook until the sauce thickens.

Finally, add the coriander and pistachio to give a crunch to the sauce.

Motors: Summer servicing

$
0
0

With winter weather seemingly being reluctant to leave us it might not seem possible but the summer season is just around the corner.

To enjoy your motoring this summer without breakdowns we identify some areas to check on your car that any reputable garage, dealer or mobile mechanic can help you with.

Cooked Engines:

Failure to keep coolant levels topped up can overheat an engine.

Check the condition and level of the engine coolant, look for signs of leakage and check that the cooling fan is working.

If not, check the fuse first or visit a garage.

Engine Oil:

If there’s not enough oil circulating around your vehicle’s engine metal to metal friction occurs.

Check the oil level regularly using the dipstick to avoid an engine seizure.

Air Conditioning:

Air-conditioning systems can harbour waterborne bacteria if not regularly maintained. Inhaling these can harm your health.

Poorly maintained air-con units drain engine power and increase fuel consumption.

Many local garages and main dealers provide vehicle air-conditioning re-gassing and maintenance.

Tyres:

Check tyre pressures – check them first thing in the morning as they expand when hot.

Tread depth should be 1.6mm (legal minimum).

Inspect tyres for dangerous bulges and cuts.

Summary:

Ensure your vehicle’s reliability this summer season by taking your car to your local garage or main dealer.

Ask their professional technicians to check it over as there’s nothing better than peace of mind.
