Crowland’s part in the English Civil War is being celebrated in a concert at the Abbey on Saturday (7.30pm).

In April 1643 Crowland stood as a solitary royalist citadel commanding the approaches to the Welland and the Nene, the surrounding fenland almost entirely in the hands of the enemy.

Crowlanders armed with muskets and hassock knives had to first withstand an assault by the relatively raw militia of Spalding, followed by three trained Parliamentary forces attacking simultaneously.

Learn what followed at the concert, entitled These Distracted Tymes. Divers Voyces is singing music from the time, including works by Thomas Tomkins, John Jenkins and Henry and William Lawes. Admission £7 on the door.
