DARTS: Lion conquer the champions

Black Lion roared to the Spalding and District League’s Supreme Cup title as they stunned champions New Saracen’s Head C on finals night.

Dave Piccaver held his nerve to see out a thrilling final 12-9 to secure a memorable cup win for the league runners-up at Spalding Services Club.

There was also a Division Two double for Rose and Crown and Kelly Foster Cup glory for Lamb and Flag, while Ashley Allen took the Singles crown.

Starting with the Supreme final, Black Lion gained revenge for their league loss with the result of the night. Kelvin Crane (3-0), James Truman (2-1), Gary Mace (2-1) and Piccaver (2-1) all secured singles wins to see of mighty Sarancen’s C, who replied through Mark Horspool (2-1), Pete Richardson (2-1) and Phil Povey (2-1).

It was more one-sided in the Secondary Cup, as second-tier kings Rose and Crown made light work of Whaplode Drove 16-5. Maximum 3-0 wins from Dougie McInerney, Shaun Biggs, Alex Gostic, Paul Ford and Mick Ebbage delivered the goods and sealed a double.

In the Kelly Foster final, top tier outfit Lamb and Flag went into their showdown with Abbey Hotel as favourites – and there was no upset. Mark Woodrow (2-1), Ashley Allen (3-0), Ben Merillion (2-1), Phil Machin (2-1) and Mick Allen (3-0) secured a 13-8 success.

Meanwhile, Des Ford from Rose and Crown picked up a 2-1 win over Black Lion’s Daniel Carnell to lift the Captain’s Cup, while Lion’s top girl Claire Ball bossed Abbey’s Nicky Rostron 2-0 in the Ladies’ Cup final.

Ashley Allen (Lamb and Flag) had too much for Hank Watson (Jolly Farmer A) and took the Division One Singles title 2-0, with Rose and Crown’s McInerney landing the Division Two Singles gong 2-1 at the expense of Ady Smith (Jolly Farmer B).

Dominant New Saracen’s Head duo Horspool and Hunt walked off with the the Division One Pairs trophy having seen off Andy Beeken and Jason Vines (Fisherman’s Arms) 2-0, while Dave Kirchin and Stuart Norton beat Jordan Kirchin and Andy Rostron 2-0 in the all-Abbey final in the Division Two pairs final.
