Spalding RFC coach Niall Thomson has paid tribute to his side after Saturday’s energy-sapping derby win over Peterborough.

The 11-10 success, played in sub-zero conditions at Thorney RFC, has put Town in a strong position to avoid the drop in Midlands One East.

Next up is a trip to Towcestrians on Saturday (3pm), with “Thommo” confident that Spalding are on-course for survival.

“I’m from Scotland and I’ve never been involved in a colder game than last Saturday,” said the respected coach. “It was simply awful conditions.

“But the score doesn’t do justice to our peformance.

“We were in their half for 35 minutes of the first half and really dug in to get a try against the elements in the second half.

“The lads are a really close-knit group and they all stood up to be counted. That win is the third of a potential five we had targeted as must-win matches if we want to stay up and we’re well on the way to doing that.”

Saturday’s bruising win has left Town with a number of injury problems. Skipper Harry Sharman is doubtful after his derby red card.
