Holbeach United went 11 points clear at the top of the United Counties League premier division today with an impressive 5-1 victory over tenth place Desborough Town.
And there was even more good news for the Tigers at the end of the match when news filtered through that second place St Ives had gone down 2-1 at Peterborough Northern Star. The Cambridgeshire side suffered only their second defeat of the season after two second half penalties from former Wisbech and King’s Lynn striker Billy Smith, the winner in the final minute.
With Spalding’s trip to Cogenhoe and Deeping’s match at Harborough called off due to waterlogged pitches, St Ives are now 11 points behind Holbeach with two games in hand, while third placed Spalding are 17 points behind with four games in hand.
Striker Andrew Tidswell started the scoring today when he headed in Wes Lewis’ cross early on. Jason Turner took the second beautifully after 21 minutes, although Desborough pulled one back soon after the re-start.
But this only served to wake up the Tigers, who made it three through Turner again on the hour, before Ben Brown’s header from a corner made it four. And late on a Flack cross was met by Parker to make it five and increase Holbeach’s goal difference to six better than St Ives.
In division one Bourne’s game at Olney was also a victim of the weather.
In the premier division of the Peterborough League Moulton Harrox kept up their title charge with a 6-1 victory at Riverside Rovers. They are now only nine points behind leaders Peterborough Sports with six games in hand.
Midweek action sees Spalding entertain Peterborough Northern Star in the United Counties League Knockout Cup on Tuesday and Holbeach play host to Yaxley in the same competition on Wednesday. Deeping – who have signed King’s Lynn’s highly-rated young keeper Alex Street on dual registration forms –travel to whipping boys Irchester on Tuesday.
