Twenty members turned out for Spalding and District Table Tennis League’s Val Mackey Doubles competition last week, writes Allan Lewis.

After 20 hard-fought games a winner and runner-up were found to play off in the semi-finals.

Earlier, using a seeded draw, the top five players were paired at random with the bottom five, and the next five with the third group based on their current rankings.

Pairs played best of three ends in the round robin format.

Group A had clear winners in Tomasz Dobrzyn and Arron Chappell who won all four of their games, dropping just two ends.

Strangely, runners-up Phil Chandler and Baber Khan’s games were all completed in straight ends, three in their favour.

Group B was much tighter with every pair conceding at least one end and the runners-up battling through three of them. However, the winners in this group were even more clear-cut with Pete Budd and Mike Mulligan not only winning all four games but being two points ahead.

Allan Lewis and Reece Kerry tied on two wins each with Richard Matthews and Clive Shardlow but went through thanks to winning the game between the two pairs in their group.

The Dobrzyn and Chappell/Lewis and Kerry semi was played at the end of the evening but over the normal best of five ends rule.

It proved to be a back and forth contest with the latter taking the first end before losing the next two comfortably.

The fourth was a marathon that tied scores before Dobrzyn and Chappell reached the final 8-11, 11-3, 11-4, 14-16 and 11-2.

The other semi had to be deferred to this week.

The committee thank all those who helped the event to run so smoothly.
