Movie club’s Eastern taster

Spalding’s Monday Movie Club is targeting the Eastern European film market to offer a wider range of screenings to its members.

The club, which meets fortnightly at South Holland Centre, is putting on a taster session of short animated films from the Czech Republic, Poland and Russia to introduce people to Eastern European cinema.

The taster session on Monday at 7.30pm is the latest offering from the club which was formed six years ago to give people in South Holland a chance to watch films other than big screen blockbusters.

Organiser Karl Gernert said: “There’s a desire between myself and the centre to widen the scope of cinema in Spalding and the club is for people who want to see films that are outside the mainstream.

“Everyone who comes gets an information pack with a review of the films and I make a little speech before the films start.

“Because the centre is an independent cinema, it can’t get any major films in until a few weeks after they’ve gone on general release.

“But the advent of digital cinema has made it a lot easier to get hold of titles, so it’s an exciting time for the club.”

Actors, producers and film technicians have all visited the club over the years to give members an insight into film-making and recent screenings have included Danish costume drama A Royal Affair and a US-made documentary about rap music.

Mr Gernert said: “We want to build on the films we show from around the world and one market we haven’t really gone into yet is Eastern Europe.

“I believe there is a market here and I hope the taster session will widen the scope of what the movie club is doing.”
