HOLBEACH United’s unbeaten UCL Premier Division start ended with a 2-1 home loss against Huntingdon Town on Saturday, while in the FA Vase Spalding United beat Retford United 3-2 and Deeping Rangers saw off Quorn 2-1.

Having won nine and drawn one of their opening ten league matches, Holbeach were red-hot favourites against promoted Huntingdon at Carter’s Park.

And all was going to plan when Rob Hughes fired the Tigers ahead on four minutes. But Ben Seymour-Shove levelled from the penalty spot (22), before veteran defender Dean Elston was forced to take over in goal just before half time.

Holbeach bossed the second period and had numerous chances to seal a win, but they were hit by a late Ben Sawyer sucker-punch five minutes from time.

With leaders St Ives Town beating Blackstones 1-0, the Tigers are five points off the pace – but do have two games in hand.

Meanwhile, Shane Tolley took his tally to the season to the 20 mark with a hat-trick for Spalding at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

He had put the Tulips 2-0 up before two late goals pegged them back, only for Tolley to complete his treble in injury time.

Deeping are also in the hat for the next round after goals from Simon Ashton and Alex Beck decided an all-UCL Premier Division affair at Outgang Road.

Striker Ashley Stevens, released by Spalding United last week, made his latest Rangers debut in the clash.

In UCL Division One, Bourne Town slipped into the bottom three after going down 3-2 at Bugbrooke St Michaels.

Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox kept their unbeaten Peterborough and District League run going by edging a thriller 4-3 at Peterborough Sports. Martin Gordon, Bobby Patterson, Ian Bradbury and Dan Woods got the goals.

There was another big win for defending champions Pinchbeck United too, as they pulled off a 5-2 success at Kings Cliffe to move four points clear of the foot.

More on the weekend football in Tuesday’s Lincolnshire Free Press.
