CYCLING: Annual grass track meet open to everyone

SPALDING Cycling Club are hosting a full programme of exciting Grass Track Racing on Saturday.

Starting from 12.30pm at Spalding Rugby Club, there will be 11 varying races taking place throughout the afternoon.

Hot on the heels of the track racing at the London 2012 Olympic Games, many riders from across the East Midlands will be hoping to copy the success of their Team GB cycling heroes.

Just like the Olympic track cycling, riders will take part in sprint races and elimination races on fixed wheel bikes around a short oval circuit.

Unlike the exemplary surface of the velodrome, the track at Spalding is a bumpy grass surface which will provide a unique challenge and guarantee lots of wheel to wheel racing and a spree of close finishes.

The format of grass track racing is very spectator friendly, with no shortage of action on the track throughout the afternoon, for adult and junior riders alike.

The highlight of the meeting will be the 8km scratch race for adults, which takes place over 32 laps of the circuit and is a real test of stamina and racing skill.

Spalding Cycling Club actively encourages children to take part in many of their events – and this grass track gathering is no different.

Young riders will have a chance to take part in the action, as the programme will include races for under-8, U/10, U/12, U/14 and U/16 racers on regular “free wheel” bikes. Any mountain or hybrid style bike would be suitable to take part too, provided riders have a helmet.

Racing entries are accepted on the line, meaning anybody interested should simply show up on Saturday.
