Mr R Mackman and family had presented to Spalding Parish Church a Sanctus Bell 100 years ago.

The gift was to celebrate Mr Mackman’s 40 years’ service as Verger at St Mary and St Nicolas Parish Church in Spalding.

The bell was due to be hung in the Sanctus Bell Cot, which had been empty for hundreds of years, at the gable end of the nave roof.

The church had no record of the former bell, but had ample evidence that the cot contained one.

The bell presented was said to have “a sweet tone”, and weighed exactly five stones.

The inscription on it reads: ‘By R M and family, to commemorate his 40th year as Verger. EPG; V; 1915.’
