Welland Yacht Club has secured £50,000 of Olympic legacy funding.
The project involves the extension and upgrading of the toilet and changing facilities as well as improving insulation and introducing solar power to cut running costs at its Spalding clubhouse in River Bank.
It is hoped that these improvements will attract new participants to sailing and other water sports from the Welland Yacht Club site as well as benefitting current members.
The improvements will ensure that the club can sustain its current sailing activities and provide further opportunities for people to make use of the facilities on a year round basis as opposed to just the summer months. It will also provide a venue for other community clubs for meetings and training.
Commodore Adam Wilson said “We are delighted to have been awarded this grant.
“The fact that Sport England have chosen to invest in Welland Yacht Club means we will be able to improve our premises and facilities to match the extremely high standard set in other areas of the club by our instructors and volunteers. The improvements are also key to making the club sustainable in the future and attracting more users to the club and river.”
Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said: “This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for South Holland.
“This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the East Midlands region. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
Welland Yacht Club is one of hundreds of projects across England benefitting from lottery investment through the second round of the Inspired Facilities fund.
Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund fund is part of the £135million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.
